Admittedly, I was too lazy to put much effort in this episode so it looks like it’ll be another slab of RANDOM-ASSNESS for the year of 2016! Dumped in here are Hunter S Thompson yelling and cursing at costumer service, John Waters giving a commencement speech, the first audiozine issue of Underground Culture Vulture from 1993, some left over business from the Las Vegas episode, best of a ‘best of’ a mammoth Sub-Genius Show compilations and a tad more. WEBSITES O’ INTERNST:...

So, how was your 2015? Mine was hijacked by two of my old obsessions; mix-tapes and Las Vegas and they both collided in a series called Las Vegas, Damnit!; 5 volumes of spoken word, music and other audio directly about this old Sin City. Some of the artists and voices you’ll hear this best-of set will be Gene Pitney, Louie LaVega (courtesy of Strike’s Kitsch Nitch), Patton Oswalt, Lenny Bruce, Dean Martin, The Pleasure Barons, Wild Man Fischer, Las Vegas not giving a damn about its...

The response to the last episode has been interesting, so I decided to aggravate it by returning to WSDMland with this radio air check from 1974. At this point, the station was no longer MOR, but rock/jazz mode….hell, they even got rid of the comedy and news stuff and just focused on the music. Your Den Pal for this clip is Penny Lane. Enjoy the whatever-ness, Don-O P. S.: For those of you who will miss the old school MOR flavor, we open the show with 40 seconds of ’beautiful music’...

UlLTIMATE ULTIMATE XANADU Unofficial (and original) liner notes By Don Fields Even though it had a short shelf life as an unsuccessful movie coupled with a successful yet forgotten soundtrack to the mainstream US market soon after its initial release, Xanadu would later find itself an active afterlife that might have Elvis and Michael Jackson and their lawyers looking over their collective shoulders. The film’s legacy and fandom would take awhile to develop, but it was the soundtrack that had...

This will be the first time that The Hour of Crap will be inundated with a radio aircheck….well, outside of the Over The Edge stuff I’ve been playing lately. Trip on back to May 1970, to the airwaves of WSDM, a MOR station that was ‘Smack Dab In The Middle’ of Chicago’s radio dials with a rather unique mix of an easy listening/lounge playlist, small pieces of comedy and funky radio spots with the “Den Pal” Dawn as your host. I got this recording over 12 years ago and have been...

This accidental episode is a large overweighed tribute to Don Joyce, a member of Negativland and the man behind the radio series Over The Edge for over 30 years. If you have visited this podcast many times, you might get the influence from the show and the man has on this and many similar shows scattered over the net and in radio. Despite the sad state of the format, Don Joyce was fervent about the use of radio for his art and the show….right up until the unfortunate end! THAT is a dedicated...

For further background behind this recording, go to my other Vegas offering on my I. A. account, The Vegas Tapes ( http://donosdump.com/VegasDump/index.html ). Are you back? Cool! Onward! This recording was made probably at the very end of my KDWN-AM recording period. After a few years recording this station for its commercials, their vibe and format was changing. By the time of this recording, the station was slowly but surely changing from music to talk radio and it was killing my mood and...

No point! No hope! No direction! No idea! Welcome to I-Don’t-Care Radio, Don-O style! Random what-not that has been plugging up my ears drums. Artists involved in this collision: Carlos & Jensen, ELO, William Shatner, Molotov Cocktail Hour, Dick Hyman, Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, Neil Hamburger, Olympia Brass Band and more. A shout out to DJ Pault for discovering that rare Olivia Newton-John Mexican remix. Stop by his site at http://burningtheground.net/ and tip his jar....

Sure, every generation and decade has its pluses and minuses, benefits to enjoy and crosses to bear, nostalgia to profit from and pissy noise to put up with and around here at the Hour Of Crap Garage, there's one decade provides the majority of piss, puss and all around bad noise and it’s the dreaded 80’s: MTV, the political wasteland that discovered someone worse than Jimmy Carter, the hyperactive hubris that was the shopping mall, the destruction of Michael Jackson, you name it and...

In our continuing strange efforts to educate the younger fortunate of the whim that was the seventies, we offer the latest textbook chapter of this decade on that whirlwind tidle wave that divided the era in half: DISCO! Actually, the mainstream success/exploitation of disco on the cultural landscape There will be some good, some bad, but we focus on the more characteristic and unknown slices of the disco ball: interesting track from the Roller Boogie soundtrack and by Jacko, Root Boy Slim...

One can easily do some serious lipjob on what the 1970’s were like: you can lean on irony, nostalgic deconstruction that made VH1 ‘Best Of’ series popular or, from old farts like yours truly, deny and make shit up to cover up the embarrassment. Unlike those old farts, I’m too old to give a crap anymore and am ready to just spill my guts until the old farts from the 90’s sets me on fire. ‘WFT 1970’s?!’ is the first part of a learner’s guide to this insane decade. A seriously...

Just got back from New Orleans, so I need to get the rest of this smelly town out of my system, thus you’ll hear some spicy N. O. related music. Unfortunately, Huell Howser passed away soon after I got back, thus I’m sprinkling in some L. A. related tracks as a tribute to this local legend. AND while I’m at it, gonna give the great L.A. based suburb, the San Fernando Valley, a shout out as well. This will be an urban stew of people shouting about their sprawl: good, bad, warts and all! ...

Welcome to the 90’s and into the world of mix-tapes. Yup, we’re going mix tape again, only this time a series of tapes called Non-Stop Weird put together by T. C. Costulis, who once did a zine called Wax Museum and hosted a radio show in Northern California. It’s generally found-sound/collage stuff by the likes of Monopause, Dead Airwaves, Born Again and a handful of T. C.’s own works. Not much else to go on from here other than pressing the play button and getting past my short...

We pick up the pieces left behind from episode 30 and jam more Xanadu-nuttiness down yer throat. We hit on the international Xanadu parade with the likes of artists I can’t pronounce like Hiromi Iwasaki, Beatriz Luengo & Yaima, Botones, Flamingo Kvintetten, Ingmar Nordstroms and Sammi Cheng. After another section of rockin’ out Xanadu style, we hear from the only band that where brave enough to do the entire soundtrack, the Brazilian band La Sound! Can you REALLY stand it!? ….and...

This is one of the two episodes that fell into the cracks. Fortunately for you (maybe), this revisited replacement pulls out all the stops and former time restrictions to give many versions of the song XANADU!...in two parts. The first part of this sugar-induced buffet we walk over as much cover version of this song as we can in one hour.  Artists in this one hour marathon include in order: Bob Downe, James Last,  Javier Alvarez, LMP, Lounge-O-Leers, Mark S. Meritt, Picnic, Regine Velasquez,...

The Amusement Park: Disneyland. The old ride in question: The PeopleMover. A ride that was so apart of it’s time of the Space Age Decade, the 1960’s, that it was closed in 1995 and remolded in the 1998, only to be closed two years later and left for an empty hollowed grave on rails for all to wonder what the hell happened. Before the closure in the mid-90’s, I was a junkie over this ride. Thus this old small mix-tape tribute. Second reason for this “old mix-tape tribute” was in form...

In the previous HoC episode, we floated down the deep bosom of The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow’ of the 1964/65 New Year World’s Fair. For this second and last ‘Fair’ show, we flip the coin of sorts and get a more critical, but no less entertaining view of this fair courtesy of New York radio legend Jean Shepherd; you’ll hear him in studios of WOR-AM and out on the field, enjoying the ying-yang to what ‘Robert Moses has brought”. Still don’t know who Shepherd is? You probably...

This is the first of two shows marking the 50th anniversary of the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair and it’s a random selection of audio related curiosities that we managed to squeeze into 90 minutes.  Large parts of this show are field recordings made by the Ray Dashner, who was so impressed with the fair during his first visit, he not only made many return visits, but got a portable tape recorder and taped as much of the fair as he could. He ended up with just over 10 hours of material....

Some of you might not remember a book I wrote and later self-published called Space Age Ash Tray and one couldn’t blame you; it was an obscure book (published through Lulu.com) about an obscure topic (a personal reexamination of post-WW2 culture) by a VERY obscure author (me). Well, not to let this topic and personal humility go, I have recently reformatted the book and its topic, added a lot of new material and mixed it all into a zine series of the same name. I liked the way it turned out...

I lost the original notes and links to this show, but what I can tell you about it is that it was created for two reasons: 1) it was an anniversary of Negativland’s infamous single ‘U2/Negativland’ and 2) the sad passing of Casey Kasem. This show is an audio documentary of the history of The Single and The Lawsuit this Single spawned, all squeezed into 79 minutes. There’s the show that introduced Snuggles to the world, both on American Top 40 (from 1984) and the group’s Over The Edge...

Around the late ’00, I got bit by the podcast bug and it was painful as I didn’t know what the hell to do and I was broke in those days. Armed with a large audio collection and a primitive PC, I scattered around for a host for my little pod, but my ideas for a pod didn’t clash well with what was offered out there; I wanted an hour for each episode and they wanted money. After that idea fell apart, I got stubborn about showing off by kicked up a MegaUpLoad account and offered my shows,...

In honor of the influx of Over The Edge shows originally done by Negativland member Don Joyce to this Archive ( https://archive.org/details/ote ), I’m slapping up an Over The Edge show that I doubt that be included in that collection. The Willsaphone Stupid Show was a two-part OTE episode that centered around recordings The Weatherman made of his family over the years and was later made into a 2 CD set through the group’s record label, Seeland Records. This show was a personal favorite of...

The radio program ‘The Molotov Cocktail Hour’ has been spinning the platter on the airways of KXLU since the late 80’s with hosts Cyrano & Senor Amor. In fact, the show itself started off in the 80’s with it original host Tallulah Breakwater. The current hosts once described their ‘playlist’ as “A finger-poppin’, tail-waggin’ concoction of questionable tastes, nefarious jazz, exotica, mysterious electronics, sultry vocals, Latin rhythms….” If you’re still not hip it...

Some time ago, I posted April Winchell Presents The Jerry Lewis Radio Spectacular in this Archive (https://archive.org/details/AprilWinchellJerryLewis), just in time for Labor Day Weekend ( no telethon. No Jerry?! The hell you say!!! ). When I mentioned this posting to a friend, he remarked ‘April who?’ I should have seen this coming. To rectify the ‘April Who?’ problem, I’m posting this second anniversary show she did in 2002. At the time of this broadcast, April had managed to stay...

We all know of the incredible career and the insane legend that is Mr. Jerry Lewis; joining up and breaking off the incredible success of Martin & Lewis comedy team, a series of insane movies, hamming it all up on his old MDA telethons, etc., Even his mistakes like The Jerry Lewis Theatres and The Day The Clown Cried only adds to the aura that surrounds Mr. Lewis. Who is April Winchell? She’s not too shabby herself. She is the daughter of Paul Winchell, appeared on his many TV shows, her...

The background story behind this collection is similar to the one I previously posted in The Internet Archive (The Vegas Tapes at https://archive.org/details/TheVegasTapes), only this time its primarily surrounding one of Los Angeles’ legendary radio personalities known as Sweet Dick Whittington. In early 1978, before I seriously got into recording material that would end up as The Vegas Tapes, my radio recording habit largely started with Sweet Dick Whittington during his days as the morning...

In 1978, I became a major Las Vegas fanboy at the ripe old age of 13 and thought this city was better than anything Disneyland could throw at me…outside of the PeopleMover and the rest of Tomorrowland. My Vegas obsession got pretty serious as I collected brochures, postcards and whatnot from various hotels and casinos like a young tyke would collect baseball cards of his favorite players. It even got to the point that I recorded commercials of these hotel/casinos from the airwaves of the...
